Lom Pangar dam to be opened despite lack of funds

Construction works on the Lom Pangar dam, in the eastern region of Cameroon, is already at 65%, said Théodore Nsangou, Executive Director of Electricity Development Corporation (EDC).

The company, official secular arm of the Cameroonian State in energy infrastructures made the announcement on February 2, 2015 in Yaoundé.

Mr. Nsangou reassured on the impounding of the dam this year. "This impounding, scheduled for next September, is the biggest challenge for this year. All warranties are ripe for this deadline to be met.

It is true that we have a number of problems, including financial problems together with the Boko Haram phenomenon that has mortgaged a large number of our objectives, but we are fighting with the support from donors, including the World Bank," reassured the Dg of EDC.

This energy infrastructure, which will revolutionize the hydroelectric potential of the country through the regulation of the flow upstream of the Sanaga River, will have a foot with a capacity of 30 MW plant.

This plant will allow the distribution of electricity to numerous villages of the region from the East, through the installation of a 90 KV transmission line, approximately 120km in length, between the site of the dam and the town of Bertoua.

Infrastructure with a capacity of more than 6 billion m3, the Lom Pangar dam water is co-financed by the World Bank (66 billion Cfa francs), the European Investment Bank (19.7 billion Cfa francs), the African Development Bank (33 billion Cfa franc), the Development Bank of the States of Central Africa (20 billion Cfa francs) the French Development Agency (39.3 billion Cfa francs) and the Cameroonian State.
