MTN Cameroon says it has exceeded 10 million active subscribers to maintain its dominance of the mobile telephone sector in Cameroon.

Six in every ten mobile telephone user is now an MTN customer. That's about half the country's population and well above the estimated number of potential voters. It currently shares the market with Orange Cameroun.

MTN stayed ahead of the competition by adding over a million customers since the beginning of the year, after ending 2013 with 8.7 million customers.

With over 10 million subscribers, its now the largest mobile telephone company in all of the Central African sub-region. The numbers are for active subscribers, that is, SIM owners who “made or received a revenue-generating call over the last 90 days.

”MTN’s 10 million-subscriber mark, registered on 17 June, comes months ahead of the arrival of the third operator Viettel, which says its set about 70% of its network.

MTN came to Cameroon in 200 by acquiring Camtel mobile under a privatization deal.

“MTN Cameroon has notably equipped the country with a state-of-the-art and an extended communication network, which democratizes access to telephony, contributes towards the development of remote areas and improves the competitiveness of businesses,” the company said in a statement.
