Marafa Hamidou Yaya, Cameroon’s erstwhile Minister of Territorial Administration and Decentralisation is at the point of death.

He was rushed to the hospital from his prison cell in Kondengui where he serves a 25-years jail sentence since April 2012. His condition has been described as very critical.

His Lead Counsel, Kofele Kale confirmed that the former minister fell ill last week and was rushed to the Yaounde University Teaching Hospital for immediate medical attention.

Kale disclosed that Marafa is suffering a Cardio-vascular problem and an eye problem.

Her hinted that the condition of the former Minister of Interior has been aggravated by the appalling living conditions at the Kondengui Maximum-Security Prison, noting that it has reached a point where Marafa if not dead, could lose his sight.

The Journal, gathered, however, that the ex-Minister had been battling with the eye problems, even before he was arrested on April 16, 2012 and incarcerated alongside former Prime Minister, Chief Ephraim Inoni.

Kale described the medical attention being given to his client as acceptable, but regretted that the conditions at the hospital are horrible, given that the hospital goes for days without water.

Marafa’s lead counsel says all is being done to guarantee the security of his client throughout his stay at the hospital. Security on him at the hospital is tied, especially after the mysterious death of his private secretary early this year.

Marafa received his 25-year jail sentence on Saturday, September 22, 2012.
