Meme Municipal Councils under investigation

The Senior Divisional Officer, SDO, for Meme, Southwest Region, David Koulbout Aman, has announced that a team investigators will visit the accounts and records of the six councils in his area of command.

Koulbout made the declaration on August 19 while overseeing an extraordinary session at the Kumba II Council on an amount of FCFA 76.5 million recently allocated for projects in that council.

The SDO stressed that he has ordered the special audit of the councils comprising; Konye, Mbonge and Kumba to take stock of what the officials have done in the past months since they assumed office. He said the exercise is aimed at knowing if the Mayors are administering their localities according to the dictates of their Councillors.

He stressed that, besides looking into the projects carried out, focus would equally be on evidence justifying all expenditures in the councils.

Koulbout declared that, mayors, treasurers, secretaries general and other senior council staff will be assessed and reoriented on their roles to suppress conflicts that hamper development.

He described the extra financial allocations and increase in local revenue collection for the Kumba II Council and called on the Mayor to ensure that the money is channelled towards the provision of basic amenities to the local population.

The Mayor to Kumba II, Martin Forcha Ndobegang, assured the population that plans were underway to kick-start the construction of the Kosala Market. The Mayor, however, regretted that some persons are still laying claim to the market land on grounds that they were not compensated.

Ndobegang remarked that the Council has stepped up revenue collection at the local level from FCFA 14 million to over FCFA 22 million realised within the same period in 2013.

Responding to questions from the SDO, the Mayor explained that the funds will be used for the construction of bridges, culverts, streets, and the purchase of equipment for health and education facilities.

According to the mayor of the Kumba II Council, it would be a record breaking-experience should they be able to meet up with the expectations of the population through meaningful development.
