Mine operator killed in Bertero-Oya

A mine operator at the Chincam Mining Company was killed by a gang of armed robbers over the weekend during his night shift on November 2.

The victim, Tcheng Bung Yang was a Chinese national who worked for the company. According to sources, the armed robbers made up of seven individuals were heavily armed and attacked a mining village in Goyo, located 40 kilometers from capital of the district, Bertero-oya around 11pm.


"They arrived at the time when workers of this company were trying to rest. They assembled all the workers and demanded cash, before leaving the place”, reported police sources.

According to the same sources, the victim was killed at close range by a homemade gun while he tried to fight back. "The operator attempted to fight with a machete, but the attackers were armed and numerous”. "They shot him dead, before disappearing", says the Sub-Chief of Bertero-Oya, Simon Ghislain Etsil.


After this attack, the security force, led by Commander of gendarmerie of Lom and Djerem Company, embarked a chase to apprehend robbers. They followed up to Goyo in search of the robbers after the incident and managed to grab two suspicious individuals who were natives of Goyo. The two suspects confessed and disclosed the other five accomplices who have escaped.
