CPDM and SDF parliamentary groups deposited the lists of their proposed committee members yesterday, March 18, 2015.

Members of Parliament (MPs) will in a plenary sitting today, March 19, 2015 examine and endorse lists submitted yesterday by the Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement (CPDM) and Social Democratic Front (SDF) parliamentary groups

for the composition of the nine committees of the National Assembly, in compliance with Section 21 (1) of the Standing Orders of the House.

Although the precincts of the National Assembly in the Ngoa-Ekelle neighbourhood were visibly empty of Members of Parliament yesterday, March 18, 2015, the office of the Director of Legislation and Linguistic Matters, Emmanuel Njitone Mesumbe, were busy as the necessary paperwork was being finalised. The call by Speaker-Elect, Hon. Cavaye Yeguie Djibril, on March 17, 2015 for parliamentary group Chief Whips to submit within 24 hours the lists of their proposed members, was heeded to.

Section 21 (1) provides that each year, after the election of the permanent bureau, the National Assembly shall set up nine committees comprising equal numbers of members of the National Assembly for consideration of matters referred to them. “Each committee will thus be made up of 20 members.

Since the CPDM group has 146 Members of Parliament, the party will have at least 16 members and at most 18 members in each committee,” explained Emmanuel Njitone Mesumbe.

After the plenary sitting today, the House Speaker will urge various committees to meet and elect their respective bureaus. Once the nine committees are set up, the Glass Palace will once more become a beehive with several draft bills to scrutinise, amongst other parliamentary business schedule for this first ordinary session of the 2015 legislative year.
