The Cameroon Democratic Union (CDU) of Adamou Ndam Njoya has rejected calls for a coalition of opposition parties to have a unique candidate against Biya in view of calls for early presidential election in Cameroon, Le Messager newspaper reported.

The spokesperson for the CDU group in the National Assembly, Hermine Patricia Tomiano Ndam Njoya, described the opposition parties that want the coalition as trying to play the game of the ruling Cameroon People’s Democratic Movement (CPDM). This is because the CPDM members and the party’s allies have not only multiplied calls for organization of early presidential election but more importantly calls for President Paul Biya to stand as their natural and unique candidate.

Following the seven-year presidential term of office, the next presidential election is expected in Cameroon in October 2018.

CDU senior officials consider the organization of early presidential election not a topical issue for now. Tomaino said those who are calling for the amendment of the constitution that will pave the way for the organization of early presidential election, fear the situation that would jeopardize their confiscation of power.

Party leader Adamou Ndam Njoya earlier during a CDU Republican Day organized in Yaounde said the organization of presidential election was not an emergency for his party. He made the declaration while answering questions from the press whether his party would participate in a precipitated presidential election. The CDU has been campaigning for the reform of Cameroon’s electoral code that would ensure the organization of transparent, fair, free and credible elections in the country, he said.
