Patrice Nganang, one of the formidable opponents of the Biya regime had himself announced his arrival in Cameroon in early December 2014. And as expected, the prolific writer on Monday, Dec. 8, 2014 at Foyer Sailors in Akwa-Douala area attended the ceremony of the Bibi Ngota price against impunity.
It was while he was there that he was arrested by elements of the national police. The men in uniform then took him to a destination that is still unknown at the time.
He was not taken alone. Members of the group, Article 37, created by Patrice Nganang who were with him, were also on board.
"The hotel is currently inaccessible to journalists and other guests arriving for the ceremony of the Bibi Ngota price against impunity. It is difficult at present to know which destinations they took and the hotel is now under the control of the police and intelligence agents," reflects a journalist who is on the premises.
The mystery surrounding the reasons for the arrests is yet to be unraveled, but a source in the police reported that the manifestation of that day at the Foyer des Marins had been banned by the Assistant Prefect of Douala 1.
Bibi Ngota whom the award is named, is a young Cameroonian journalist who died while "arbitrarily detained" at Yaounde Kondengui prison in 2010 when he was accused of forgery by a high official of the Biya regime.
Patrice Nganang as many defenders of human rights since the death, denounced the conditions of detention and abuse of power that would have precipitated the death of the young journalist.
So it is to speak out against the fact that "the killers" of Bibi Ngota went unpunished that the association "Tribunal Article 37" has created the Bibi Ngota price against impunity to reward the best articles on human rights
