Some 70 passengers on board a public transport company bus would never have imagined the ill-fate that would befall them last weekend.

Seven of them under critical health conditions were still receiving treatment yesterday at the Douala Laquintinie Hospital alongside two others with light wounds. Meanwhile one death was recorded following a road accident at Souza, Moungo Division.According to the Gendarmerie Brigade Commander at Nkapa, Ronsard Menkoande, a Mondial Express Bus, matriculated LT 1455 T, left Bamenda in the North West Region in the night of Thursday January 9.

At Souza, around a spot known as "Mbonjo Bar", while overtaking a stationed Mercedes lorry that had been abandoned by the road side for over a week (matriculated LT TR 316 AA belonging to PRO PME locataire G3 BIZ Ltd), the public transport bus faced an oncoming vehicle. In trying to regain its lane to avert a face-to-face collision, the 70-seater's rear crashed into the lorry. The driver's attempts to force his way through only led to more damages as the vehicle was wrecked by the heavy duty transport truck.

Among the victims, mainly women, one lost her two legs, another one hand, while the third lost one of her breasts, amidst other damages. At press time, the driver was in custody, while the bus was parked in the premises of the Gendarmerie Brigade, pending investigations.
