Members of the Regional Local Support Committee met in Buea on August 11.
For the fourth consecutive time, members of the Local Support Committee for the celebration of the 50th Anniversary of Cameroon's Reunification answered present at the National Social Insurance Fund (CNPS) Hall, led by the Grand Chancellor of Cameroon National Orders, Peter Mafany Musonge, the committee's chairperson. After the Meme Divisional Headquarters, Kumba and the Fako Divisional headquarters Limbe, the Saturday August 11 gathering was the third fundraising exercise. Thus, all South West elite, aiming at the FCFA 150 million targeted to complement the efforts of the National and Regional Organising Committee came to concretise their commitments in the South West Regional headquarters, Buea.
Addressing the august assembly, Peter Mafany Musonge explained that the two previous fundraising ceremonies have produced a total of FCFA 92 million out of the desired FCFA 150 million targeted. He lauded the local stakeholders for their consistent massive turn out, showing that they "place matters of our Region very high on the list of priorities," he said. His end note was an appeal to all to "deep our hands very deep into our deep pockets, to fill the gap of FCFA 58 million francs. I have no doubt that all of us will rise to the challenge and give generously for a worthy cause; and bring great honour to the people of our Region."
In launching the fundraising proper, the elite in their various capacities gave in their contributions in cash, cheques and pledges, irrespective of their levies. At the end of the day, a total of FCFA 35 million francs was raised being FCFA 16 million in cash, FCFA 18 million in pledge and FCFA one million in cheque.
Highlights of the Saturday come together included an acknowledgement of newly appointed South Westerners in State Universities by the Head of State and a statement of account by the finance subcommittee. It was revealed that a bank account has been opened in BICEC Yaounde on behalf of the committee with three signatories. As of July 31, 2012, out of the collected FCFA 92 million francs, FCFA four million has been spent, giving a balance of FCFA 89 million francs.
