Schools resume, traffic hold-ups return in Yaounde

Return To School Yaounde

Heavy traffic jams have resurfaced in Yaounde this 20th April 2015 as the third term of the academic year begins.

This morning, students and pupils could be seen queued up along the streets of Yaounde as early as 6:30 am, waiting to get a lift from the numerous taxis and other public transport vehicles.

In the Mendong neighbourhood, the flow of traffic was considerably interrupted with students spotted all over the road and taxis stopping at almost every point to seek passengers’ destinations.

The once free road was obstructed with hooting vehicles and children of all ages, either alighting from or getting into taxis and omnibuses (clandos).

While some students desperately stood along the streets with little or no hope of getting a taxi in time, others went the extra mile to propose more, hoping to entice a taxi driver into changing his course to their advantage.

The congestion only lessened after about 8:30 am when most students and pupils were off the street and hopefully in class.

The scenario is sure to repeat itself as from about 2:30 pm when classes would have ended and students should be heading home for the day.
