Second Term Begins in Earnest

Pupils and students nationwide effectively began classes yesterday January 6 for the second term of the 2013/2014 academic year. As early as 6:30 a.m, boys and girls in school uniforms were seen along major roads in Yaounde heading to their various school campuses. During morning devotions, head teachers and principals told the academic family to take studies seriously for it is a decisive term mixed with a lot of extra-curricular activities.

At 6:30 a.m., some eager students were already seen at the school premises of the Government High School Biyem-Assi, Yaounde. "Second term has started and I am happy to be back in school after a two-week break that was spiced with feasting," said a student of the institution. By 7:30 a.m, the majority of students were already within the school premises. The gates of the school were supposed to be closed at 7:30 a.m, but because some students were late, the Discipline Master, Achille Belinga said the school gates were left open until 7:45 to give room for late comers. Those who did not have the proper hair style were sent home to have their hair cut.

Just like students of Mevick Bilingual Grammar School, Etoug-Ebe, Yaounde, Form Two students of Government High School Biyem-Assi were given lectures in the English Language as the English teacher, Clarisse Sih Kennah was present in class, asking questions on how the students spent their end-of-year festivities. By midday yesterday, High school students of Mevick Bilingual Grammar School had already received lessons in subjects such as Physics and Chemistry. The Principal of Mevick Bilingual Grammar School, Levinus Manjo told students during morning assembly that the term is a decisive one and not as long as the first term, with a lot of activities that will take them away from their studies. "Maximise the little time you have," Mr Levinus told students while adding that they should draw and strictly follow-up their individual learning timetables.

The situation is not different amongst pupils of the Nursery and Primary sections. Pupils at the Parents National Educational Union (PNEU) School Yaounde were massively seen in their classrooms actively taking part in lessons. The head teacher of PNEU School, Edward Ewule Menyoli said there is no joke as all teachers are in place giving lessons on topics that had already been validated by the school administration.
