Secondary School Staff Tackle Student Performance

Officials and staff of secondary education yesterday in Douala sought ways to enhance academic excellence among students. That the general results in official exams in the region in 2012 showed performance less than the year before reflected in the seriousness of the sector meeting, which held in Lycée Joss in Bonanjo.

Blame is upon the level of coverage of school programmes, insufficient staffing, and students increasingly becoming uninterested in learning and distracted by games, TV and other forms of technology, according to Nseke Edimo Marc, Principal of Lycée bilingue de Mambanda.

Secondary Education Delegate for the Littoral, Jean Jules Ebongue Ngoh, instructed staff of the region to investigate the conduct of students and scrutinise report cards before admitting them. Principals were exhorted to go visiting the classes during lessons to find out what the teaching is like.

The meeting, which held under the theme "Pedagogy of excellence at the service of professionalization for an emergent Cameroon", also geared towards orienting the participants towards the professionalisation of teaching and teachers.

Measures such as sensitisation of parents and children, as well as involving the teaching corps in good pedagogy were some of the measures taken to prevent the drop in exams, and encourage better student performance.
