Sous-préfet of Mokolo demands money to fight Boko Haram

This was the initiative of the heads of villages and neighbourhoods referred to as standby units called "Village vigilance committees" once flourished in the region of the far North.

Proponents of these committees were attempting to assist the administrative authorities and the security forces by proposing solutions to deal with the growing insecurity in the villages.

With the resurgence of the Boko Haram attacks, these units are again requested to contribute to the strategy to combat the threat posed by the Islamic sect.

The administrative and military authorities held meetings to tell leaders of these units the strategies and the means to make them useful and efficient in this fight.

"August 14, 2014 at the end of a meeting held at the initiative of Théophile Nguia Beina, sous-préfet of the District of Mokolo, and featuring among others, traditional leaders of the town, it was decided that in the context of the fight against Boko Haram, each family will give the sum of 200 CFA francs every month to members of the vigilance committees.

It is just a war effort that we ask from the people. We must recognize that vigilance committees are very important. They give alert to the defence forces when there is suspicious movements in the villages', explains Théophile Nguia Beina.

According to him, for the success of the measure taken, every traditional leader from its territory of command is required to have a register where he must record the collected money.
