South Region: 41 elephant tusks seized

The Delegation of Forestry and wildlife of the South Region has impounded 41 elephant tusks from traffickers.

They were caught on their way from Gabon to Nigeria through Cawpo.

According to reports from the South Regional Delegate of Forestry and Wildlife, traffickers of elephant tusks and ivory are no longer using the terrestrial means of transportation; instead, they have resorted to marine transportation since they believe the authorities concerned are ignorant about their new schemes.

The Delegate of Forestry and Wildlife further explains that their new path is linked between Libreville and Nigeria through the sea.

Unfortunately for them Wildlife experts are always on their guard. The Wildlife crew discovered the elephant tusks in travelling bags placed in a boat as though they were dresses. The bags were unzipped and the elephant tusks impounded.

It was also revealed that since wildlife officials launched a strict campaign against poaching in the South Region, poaching activities progressively came to a halt especially in Djoum - a locality of the South Region noted for hosting a great number of poachers.

Authorities regreted that even though the activity has died down in Djoum, its viruses are spreading like wildfire in other localities in the Region.

Even though 2000 elephant tusk including 1, 753 ivory products were burnt to ash publicly in Yaounde- Cameroon about two months ago, poachers are still adamant to government’s warnings.

Most of them seem very un concerned about the imprisonment terms and fines betiding the crime.
