South West mayors refute planned strike action

The Regional President of the United Councils and Cities of Cameroon, UCCC, Southwest Bureau, Aboko Patrick Anki, Mayor of Kombo-Abedimo in the Bakassi Peninsular, has refuted the allegations that Mayors are planning for a sit-down strike beginning August 2015, arguing that such allegations are unfounded especially at a moment when the Government is studying the file for mayors' salaries.

“South West mayors have never sat in any forum to agree on any strike action. All this is only to spoil our faces with the State, which is not our intention,” he noted.

Aboko Patrick was speaking during the general assembly meeting of the Southwest Mayors that took place at the Kumba City Council Chambers on Friday, July 17, 2015. He also used the ceremony to express gratitude on behalf of the South West Mayors to the Head of State, President Paul Biya, for the decentralisation process which is speedily coming to the councils.

He also thanked PNDP and FEICOM for their marvelous job in the improvement of the councils in terms of capacity-building and infrastructural development.

The General Assembly that brought together close to 25 Mayors of the Southwest Region, was under the watchful eyes of the Inspector General at the South West Governor’s Office, Haman Dairou and the 2nd Deputy SDO for Meme, Nelson Yongkuma Gamsi.

In his keynote address, the Inspector General at the Governor's Office, urged the Mayors to make good use of the financial and development agents sent to their various councils so as to achieve the developmental objectives of the councils and their expertise.

The meeting according to the Southwest Regional President of UCCC was aimed at re-enforcing the atmosphere of conviviality among the mayors and to present the situation of the association since their election in 2014.

He disclosed that, UCCC is now proud of an independent office, well-equipped and staff, to take care of the daily activities of the association in the region. He also revealed that the divisional bureau will soon go operational.
