Spelling Bee enhances language proficiency

Regional English Language Officer Scott Chiverton underlined the importance of fun activities in enhancing English language proficiency. He made this remark on February 18, at the opening of the 2015 Spelling bee competition in Yaounde.

This was the 4th Annual Spelling Bee competition to have been organised by the U.S. Embassy in Cameroon at College International La Gaieté in Yaounde. Fai Nadesh won this edition of 2015 Spelling Bee Competition.

In all fifty-six students from 14 secondary schools participated in the 4th annual Spelling Bee in Yaounde organized by the U.S. Embassy. With fourteen schools participating, the five-hour competition brought together Ministry of Secondary Education officials, teachers, students, and parents.

In his remarks, the Regional English Language Officer, Scott Chiverton on behalf of the U.S. Ambassador Michael Hoza underlined the importance of fun activities in language and knowledge acquisition while stressing on the importance for students to improve their spelling, increase their vocabulary, learn concepts, and develop correct English usage that will help them all in their lives. The fifty-six contestants spelled a total of about 115 English words.

At the end of the Competition the young Student Fai Nadesh, a form 3 student from Government Bilingual High School Etoug-Ebe was crowned 2015 Spelling Bee champion in Yaounde as she successfully spelled “ESCUTCHEON” to win the bee.

The Spelling Bee is part of the U.S. Embassy’s English Language outreach programs to enhance students’ interest in English language proficiency, thus equipping them with the skills necessary to access relevant information about the United States.
