Students of the City of Saints and Scholars have benefited from a seminar organized by the Student Government Association (STUGA) of the Catholic University Institute of Buea (CUIB) under the theme “Lets Talk about Sex”.

During the seminar, students were educated by various facilitators who spoke on different concepts; ranging from peer pressure, pre-marital sex, marriage, and sexuality.

CUIB campus priest Rev. Fr. Peter Akanang told students with reference from Genesis Chapter 1 and 2 that the purpose of sex is for procreation and companionship stating that as students procreation should not be a preoccupation.

He encouraged students to build healthy relationships and restrain from pre-marital sex stating that sex out of marriage is not a true expression of love. Fr. Peter during his discourse advised students to stay away from pornography, secluded places, and discussions which can push them to unhealthy relationships.

He encouraged students to exercise self-control and keep a spiritual life which is imperative for a healthy relationship.

On her part, Dr. Mbome Yolanda of the Sister Emmanuel Fomenky Memorial Foundation Clinic warned students against sexual adventures which can lead to unwanted pregnancies, sexually transmitted diseases, and family disputes which have fatal consequences.

She encouraged students not to succumb to peer pressure concerning sex for whatever reasons as it will leave them with a feeling of shame, heartbreaks and may lead to promiscuity, suicide, shame and suicide attempts.

Tangwan Brandon a student of the College of Business and Technology said the seminar was very educating as facilitators clearly stated the rationale of sex, the risk of pre-marital sex and unhealthy relationships. Tatiefu Keing added that he has learned that “sex is only for married people”.

The seminar which was organized by STUGA was aimed at educating students on the concept of sex and sex education and above all how to navigate through the pressure of their youth and how to build healthy relationships.
