The causes of floods in Maga highlighted

The Minister, Pierre Hele presented Tuesday in Yaounde, an environmental audit of the disasters that occurred regularly in the North and far north of the country.

High rainfall, not efficient storm water drainage system, among many others were factors at the origin of the floods in the regions of North and far north from 1994 to 2012. The negative impact on the socio-economic life of the people, took the Ministry of environment, Nature Protection and sustainable development (Minepded) to closely study the phenomenon of natural disasters in this part of the country.

It is in this context that he achieved a strategic environmental audit of floods in the area. The document was presented at an official ceremony presided over by the Minister Hele Pierre, last Tuesday in Yaoundé in the presence of the Ambassador of Turkey in Cameroon, Omer Farük Dorgan.

The environmental audit of the floods in Maga is a systematic analysis of the facts, causes and the impact of the flooding of the territory in the feeding of water development area. It took six months to the consultant to sunset on paper. It extends over 463 pages divided into 10 chapters.

There are reflected in addition to the presentation of the methodology used, the description of the study area and a presentation of the management of the risks of Reclamation dam. Non-optimal use of the waters of the restraint has been identified as a major cause of the flooding.

The audit therefore proposed a set of recommendations in the sense to foresee measures to mitigate or adapt to the devastating effects of the flooding of the water and benefit from the positive effects.

The implementation of environmental and social management plans proposed has been strongly recommended by the Minister to the citizens of the regions affected, for better flood control and therefore, their transformation into economic asset.
