This is not the image of Cameroon I want - Finke

In a match marked with ill-discipline Cameroon coach Volker Finke has vowed to get to the bottom of the incident towards the end of their 4-0 drubbing by Croatia that saw Benoit Assou-Ekotto headbutt teammate Benjamin Moukandjo.

Arguing shortly before the end of the game the Tottenham defender was seen to thrust his head at the attacker, and as the disagreement almost continued into the tunnel had to be separated by injured captain Samuel Eto’o.

“It’s unimaginable,” insisted Finke at his Press conference .

“I saw this happen and I need to find out exactly what happened, why exactly these two players exploded.

“I hate to see that. It’s not the image of Cameroon I want to project.”

The Indomitable Lions were behind within 11 minutes in Manaus, as Ivica Olic tapped in from close range before Ivan Perisic capitalised on a Charles Itandje error just after half-time and Mario Mandzukic eventually grabbed a brace.

“I apologise for the result, it really hurts,” added Finke. “We had no control on the game and I didn’t like the behaviour of my team.

“We have to look forward – this team has players for the future.”

A goal behind the Africans were always facing an uphill battle after Alex Song was sent-off for striking out at Mandzukic shortly before the break and later apologised for his on field misdemeanour

“I’m very sad at the moment as I feel I have let my country and myself down,” Song told the Press conference.

“It was a stupid moment and I’m truly sorry. If I could do anything to take it back I would. Please forgive me.”
