Thousands Honour Late Prof. Peter Ndumbe

The amphitheatre 750 of the University of Buea overflowed on Thursday July 4, 2013 with people who turned up to show their last respect for the fallen Professor of Medicines, former Dean of the Faculty of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences of the University of Yaounde and the Faculty of Health Sciences of the University of Buea, in succession. Professor Peter Martins Ndumbe passed to eternal glory on the May 14, 2013 in South Africa.

In an academic honour ceremony organised by the University of Buea for the fallen icon, thousands of mourners comprising of the academia, health officials, administration and researchers, among others, from diverse fields of work paid glowing tribute to the late University Don. Different eulogies that came from the different institutions and organisations that the late Professor adhered to, described him as a dedicated, selfless, committed teacher, researcher, medical doctor and administrator.

The Vice Chancellor of the University of Buea, Nalova Lyonga, described him as a "baobab" who was immeasurable intellectually, materially and spiritually while the Rector of the University of Yaounde, Professor Maurice Aurelien Sosso, just like the Vice Chancellor of the Christian University of Cameroon, CCU, Professor Emmanuel Chia said his demise is a colossal loss to the entire Scientific community that was still expecting a lot from him.

On her part, the Representative of the World Health Organisation, WHO, where the late Prof. Ndumbe worked before his demise on May 14, lamented the loss of what she termed a very valuable authority and staff who was dedicated to the welfare of all. Dr. Charlotte Ndiaye indicated that the deceased was a clear example that Africa can produce scientists of high standards. The Vice Chancellor of UB used the academic honours to announce the creation of the Peter Martins Ndumbe Charity Health Fund which would cater for patients who can afford medical care.

Born in 1954, Professor Peter Ndumbe before his death held several posts of responsibility both nationally and internationally. His last post until his death was the Programme Manager for Research, Publications and Library Services at the WHO regional office for Africa in Congo-Brazzaville. His mortal remains were laid to rest in his native Ofrikpabi village, Nguti Sub-division last Saturday July 6, 2013.
