Three Swedish citizens have been arrested in Cameroon. They were arrested while sleeping at the airport as they waited for their flight, said Swedish newspaper Afton Bladet.
“I can confirm that three Swedish citizens have been detained in Cameroon, says Erik Wirkensjö at the Foreign Ministry” newspaper reported.
Reports did not name the particular airport in which the three Swedes were arrested – either Douala or Yaounde.
The three Swedes men, according to the newspaper source have been on holiday in Cameroon together. The group of friends was arrested by police as they slept in the airport waiting for a flight. The arrest was conducted last week Wednesday and since then the men, reported to be between 20 and 30 years, have not been released.
According to the Foreign Ministry, they have not yet received any information about why they were arrested. “We have no more information about this now, but we are following the case further,” said Erik Wirkensjö.
The men, according to the report, already detained for four days, share a cell with 15 other people, according to an acquaintance of one of the men. “He’s scared and just wants to get home. It’s a real nightmare holiday, said the source in Cameroon.”
So far, neither the Cameroon Police nor senior government officials have made a statement acknowledging or negating the arrest. At press time, we had not been able to contact Issa Tchiroma who doubles as Gov’t Spokesman and Minister of Communication.
