Life is becoming unbearable in the urban and semi urban milieu. This is due to an increase in the rate of road accidents especially in big towns and cities.
In Yaounde and its environs, road accidents are a common phenomenon.
Of recent, seven people perished in a fatal accident in the Biteng on in the outskirts of Yaounde. In the Ekounou neighborhood last year, a truck hit eight vehicles while negotiating a bend leaving three people dead and several others wounded. In the Mvan neighbourhood last year, a truck transporting petrol crushed ten vehicles, killing the driver of one of the vehicles.
Still in 2012, a timber truck from Yaounde collided-head on with a Toyota Hiace bus from Ngoumou in the Ahala neigbourhood some 100m from a filling station. Three people died in the accident. Many people have lost at least a relative or a friend in accidents in the city or its outskirts. Yaounde inhabitants cannot go about their daily chores freely due to the many trucks that equally move from one end of the town to the other for diverse purposes. These trucks which are mostly cargo trucks supply goods and services to shops, markets and other diverse business activities.
Even though the Ministry of Transport had signed an order calling on heavy duty trucks to move in the town at a certain hour, many truck drivers have failed to respect the instructions of the Minister. The high rate of accidents in the city is blamed on the movement of trucks belonging to some big companies such as brewery companies and other big companies. The truck drivers are accused of reckless driving. Also the poor technical state of the vehicles is a major cause for concern. In order to restore order in the sector, the Minister of Transport, a meeting with top officials of companies such as Brasseries du Cameroun, Guinness Cameroun, HYSACAM and Le Bus in the Ministry of Transport took place in Yaounde yesterday March 26, 2013.
