On February 19, the U.S. Embassy in Yaoundé welcomed the distinguished visit of Mr. Barkindo Ibrahima, Mayor of Garoua II, and Ms. Mairama Haman Bello, Municipal Counselor of Garoua II. They were met by Public Affairs Officer Roberto Quiroz II and Senior Press Assistant Thomas Bouba.

The Mayor’s visit took place one week following Ambassador Michael S. Hoza’s trip to Garoua I and II, where he underscored the United States’ partnership with Cameroon to promote security, wildlife protection, health, and education, including through the American Corner in that city.

Mayor Ibrahima and Ms. Haman Bello thanked the U.S. Embassy for the Ambassador’s visit, and discussed areas of mutual cooperation to further promote the empowerment of women and girls in Garoua.

Mr. Quiroz presented Mayor Ibrahima a book on U.S. national parks by American photographer Ansel Adams, and noted: “As President Obama has said, the United States places a top priority in promoting programs and ideas devised and implemented by African youth to promote development and women’s rights in their communities.

We believe that Africa’s future is being shaped through the talents and ideas of African youth today, who will one day inherit leadership responsibilities in all sectors.

This is especially important for civil society and the private sector, which have the potential to support governments by offering contributions and solutions to mutually shared challenges, and to create jobs that can ensure citizens financially support their families and communities.

We commend your strong support for encouraging women and youth to actively partner with their fellow citizens to promote development through their ideas and voices.”
