The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), Antonio Guterres is expected in Cameroon on Monday for a three-day working visit, an official source has told APA.

In addition to his meetings with local officials, Mr. Guterres will visit the Minawao refugee Camp (far north of the country) which now accommodates over 33,000 Nigerian nationals, who fled the atrocities by the Islamist sect Boko Haram in their country.

A total of over 200,000 Nigerian and Central African refugees have amassed in Cameroon in the course of a year.

Over the past few weeks, the HCR’s field team seemed to be overwhelmed by the number of needy people arriving at the same time within a very short time, lacking shelter, medical care, water and food.

On behalf of refugees from the Central African Republic (CAR), who are currently living in the eastern and Adamaoua regions, UNHCR and the United Nations Children’s Organization (UNICEF) recently launched, in collaboration with Cameroon’s Ministry of Basic Education, an initiative to facilitate to needy children access to education, through a European Union package of over CFA 300 million.
