University Student Union leaders dismissed

Jean Thiery Batoum Nyobe, a student of the Higher Teachers Training College, University of Yaoundé 1 and President of the Association For the Defence of Students Rights and his Secretary General Tchialeu Demanga Barthelemy have been both been dismissed and banned from enrolling at any state owned university in Cameroon.

The decision was made by Cameroon's Minister for Higher Education Jacques Fame Ndongo, one of President Biya's numerous Francophone Beti-Ewondo Ministers in government.

Minister Fame Ndongo said both students were found guilty of examination malpractice. However, government media houses are reporting the contrary that the student union leaders were expelled for inciting violent protest inside the university campus.

Cameroon Concord gathered that in March 2014, the Rector of the University of Yaoundé 1 increased school fees levy from 50,000 Fcfa to 56,000 Fcfa.

The students under their elected leadership reacted with a peaceful demonstration inside the campus in which a speech was delivered reminding the university of Yaoundé 1 hierarchy of the presidential decree No 93/033 that was signed in 1993 putting the school fees at 50,000 Fcfa.
