University of Yaoundé I re-launches graduation ceremony

The solemn Ceremony took place Friday last for several promotions under the chairmanship of the Minesup.

Is has been for several decades that the tradition of solemn awarding of the diplomas has disappeared within State universities in Cameroon. "We have been expecting these scrolls for years.

Each time, it has served certificates which are not always authentic.

Especially for those of our comrades who went abroad. It's a real relief to finally receive these graduates, “explains Rodolphe Tagne, with his Master's degree in chemistry in his hands. Indeed, conscious of the inconvenience caused by the production of graduates, through reforms it incurred and above all, taking his responsibilities as "mother of universities in Cameroon" the University of Yaoundé I resumed Friday last with graduation.

This was during a solemn ceremony at the palais de Sports in Yaounde, presided over by Minesup.

The Rector of this institution, Maurice Aurélien Sosso, provides that "this ceremony will be now listed as one of the most beautiful pages in the history of the University of Yaoundé I, as it enshrines the resumption of an important academic tradition. To Minesup regretted the fact that this company was suspended "for economic reasons."

All congratulating Prof. Sosso for his willingness to see again the diplomas given to applicants of his University, Jacques Fame Ndongo hoped the tradition will be quickly re-launched in other universities of the State, because it is easy to falsify an attestation and a duly completed degree.

In the meantime, these are thousands of graduates, Bachelor, Master and doctoral levels who received their scrolls last Friday.

They are from the Faculty of arts, letters and social sciences and Humanities (FALSH) and the Faculty of sciences (FS), promotions 2010 to 2013.

Exactly 593 engineers of the five latest promotions (2008 to 2013) of the École nationale supérieure polytechnique (ENSP).

It was also an opportunity for deans and Director of these institutions to present their different chains, path and especially the achievements of the professionalization of teaching.

Moreover, professional Masters Winners were presented at this ceremony. The problem of student overcrowding in the amphis was also discussed. We are talking about a ratio of one teacher for 50 students, far from the standards of Unesco, which is of one teacher for 20 students.

While most of the winners are questioning the interest of these graduates which opens the door to unemployment, Pr Fame Ndongo ensures that "the Cameroonian University has no vocation to train the unemployed. The public service recruits regularly, but with a diploma in his pocket, you must be able to be self-employed."

Nevertheless, the Minister asked all heads of academic institutions to reinforce the professionalising of academic studies, including faculty cycles.
