Following the decision that outlawed the circulation of heavy duty vehicles within the day, the Minister of Transport, Robert Nkili has once again authorized the circulation of certain categories of heavy duty trucks within the day but with strict conditions.
Due to protest from stakeholders in the transportation sector, Minister Robert Nkili reviewed his decision and now permits trucks charged with the transportation of essential products which are in high demand to carry out activities during the day but on condition that they maintain a speed of 40 km/hour.
Those concerned within these categories are transporters of basic commodities and trucks that supply sand to construction sites
The communiqué that amends the first decision emphasizes that there shall be very tough sanctions if the initial 16th October 2014 ban on the circulation of trucks from 6 a.m to 10 p.m at night is not respected.
In reaction to the decision uplifting the ban on some categories of heavy duty vehicles, the population has been criticizing the recklessness of those who have been authorized to carry out the daylight activities.
A commercial motorbike rider in Yaounde for example, has criticized the high speed maintained by HYSACAM drivers in urban centres.
It is worth noting that government’s decision comes after a couple of ghastly accidents caused by these heavy trucks within urban centres; the most tragic being that which took place at Biyem assi in Yaounde, taking the lives of more than ten Cameroonians and causing injury to a couple of others.
