Government's compassion to victims of recent floods in Akwaya, Manyu Division in the South West Region, remains a focal point of discussion after an inter-ministerial delegation visited the area during the weekend to evaluate the extent of damages caused by a landslide that occurred on July 29, 2012.

On instructions from President Paul Biya, the delegation headed by the Minister Delagate to the Minister of Territorial Administration and Decentralisation in charge of Regional and Local Authorities, Jules Doret Ndongo handed a package of FCFA 100 million to the Governor of the South West Region, for the victims.

According to CRTV radio reports, Minister Jules Doret Ndongo gave special instructions to the Local Crisis Management Committee on how the money will be disbursed and used.

While appreciating the gesture and government's compassion and concern, the Mayor of Akwaya called on the government to hasten development projects in Akwaya just as it is doing in Bakassi. He said cognisant of the enclave nature of the area, special attention and incentives should be given to civil servants and other officials working in the area.

It should be recalled that the recent landslide left close to 50 families homeless, cattle, houses, farms and property destroyed. Reports say a section of the only road linking Akwaya to the other localities was destroyed by the landslide; thus making the area inaccessible.
