Cameroonians have joined the international community to commemorate World Environment Day.

The day has been celebrated under the theme “Seven billion dreams. One planet. Consume with care.”

The high point of weeklong activities is this 5th June 2015 when the Minister of the Environment and Nature Protection, Pierre Hele presided over activities at the Yaounde Conference Centre.

For one week, experts in the domain of environment and other stakeholders organised a number of encounters including conferences, debates, educative talks, exhibitions and quizzes that focused on a number of environmental challenges.

These activities were organised under the patronage of the Ministry of Environment and Nature Protection.

The Ministry, through a communique, emphasised what environmentalists have been focusing on over the decades; that the environment like other goods, should be consumed with moderation.

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is ringing a warning bell against different environmental abuses. UNEP contends that if current consumption and production patterns remain the same and the world population reaches 9.6 billion, we will need three planets to sustain our ways of living and consumption by 2050.

World Environment Day was initiated by the United Nations to bring to focus the dangers of environmental abuse.
