Cavaye feeds hopeful refugees

The Speaker of the National Assembly, Hon Cavaye Yeguie Djibril, has donated 100 bags of cereals, foodstuff and material for the construction of 20 latrines in the refugee camps.

The 20 latrines are intended to curb the rate of open air defecation and step up the sanitary conditions in the new refugee camps.

Cavaye recently handed over the aforementioned items to thousands of Nigerian refugees who had just fled into Cameroon and were camping at the Mora Municipal Stadium.

Speaking at the gathering, Cavaye stressed on the need for the latrines to be constructed immediately and prevent the people from suffering from deteriorating sanitary problems.

The gesture of the House Speaker was in response to a plea from authorities at the camp about the worrying sanitary conditions, characterised by people defecating in open air. The donation comes at a time when, elites of the Region had raised CFA10 million to help the refugees.

Statistics from the United Nations High Commission for Refugees, UNHCR, show that over 1969 refugees had just been cooped into the Minawo Refugee Camp in Mayo-Sava Division, an average of 300 per day.

Despite this relocation, a good number of these refugees who troop in on a daily basis live at the Mora Stadium.

Reacting to the donation, a refugee, Chetima, said “this is not the first time that the MP is visiting us; we constantly receive help from him. Recently, we received cartons of sardines, loaves of bread and other foodstuff. It is my fervent wish that others should emulate his example. We have nothing and we need help.”

At the end of the donation, the refugees prayed for peace to continue prevailing in Cameroon.
