Plans to achieve greater success in the basketball game over the years, has not been very successful, the Southwest Regional League of Basketball initiated the training session that was approved by the Cameroon Basketball Federation and finally by FIBA (International Federation of Basketball).

The 10-day programme, hosted by the Catholic University Institute of Buea, is aimed at training young coaches, basketball players, sports reporters and coaches of primary and secondary schools. At the end of the 10-day intensive training, participants will be awarded an international Diploma in coaching. The seminar is the first to be hosted out of the nation’s capital.

It has been six years since Cameroonians have had an opportunity and access to the Young Coach FIBA Module1 training session with over 100 participants from five Regions of Cameroon.

In excitement, the National Secretary General of Cameroons Basketball Federation, Camel Njoh Ekiti expressed joy of having the opportunity to train such a large number of coaches that will, in turn, train young basketballers who will improve Cameroons performance in the near future.

The different experts from the Northwest, Centre, West , South and Southwest Regions, are to be trained mainly on the basic skills needed at the initiation stage in basketball and, most importantly, how to develop a cordial relations with the young players and enhance greater output of the players in academics, as coach Emile Ifose Mbella stated.

The instructor, Herve Bouwe, said the priority of every coach should be to make a difference in every young athlete so that he improves in character and skill, not leaving out the educational aspect, so that, in a few years, the coach should be able to boast of successfully training a good player who is outstanding and can compete in higher leagues.

In order to support the schools which, in most cases do not have the necessary tools needed in the game, the organisers have promised to donate basketballs to the coaches in the primary schools who will deal with children at tender age and who will make the young players to either have a negative or positive attitude towards the game.

Mbella said; “We will be very happy if the coaches don’t teach only basketball, but basketball together with character as basketball is an educational tool.
