2013 Varsity Games Around the Corner

The 16th edition of the games will open on Saturday April 20, 2013 in Ngaoundere.

The 16th edition of the University Games will begin on Saturday, April 20 in Ngaoundere with over 19 university institutions expected to take part. The battle this time will be to dethrone the Higher Institute of Youth and Sports, INJS, which has dominated the competition of recent winning four consecutive titles.

During the last edition of the Games in Buea, INJS topped the medal tally chart with 45 medals (17 Gold, 16 silver and 12 Bronze). The University of Yaoundé II was second with 45 medals (12 Gold, 10 Silver and 23 Bronze) followed by the University of Dshang in the third position with 31 medals and the University of Douala in the 4th position with 27 medals. The "Institut Universitaire du Golf de Guinée" (18 medals).

The Universities of Yaoundé I and Ngaoundéré occupied the 6th and the 7th positions respectively. The host, University of Buea was distant 8th with 17 medals (3 Gold, 7 Silver and 9 Bronze). Meanwhile, the National Polytechnique of Bambui and the Catholic University finished at the bottom of the tables with no medal recorded.

The university games were instituted to serve as distraction from the busy academic schedule of university curriculum and enable the students to blend sports and studies given sports leads to a healthy mind, in a healthy body. It was also created to serve as a forum for youths from different university institutions to meet and learn about the other's culture thereby fostering national unity. The games also serve as a nursery for the detection of talents for national and international competitions. It will be the second time the University of Ngaoundere will be hosting the competition.
