Ajax sporting director Marc Overmars has confirmed that the Dutch side are closing in on a deal to sign striker Samuel Eto’o this summer.
The Cameroon international has been a free agent since leaving Chelsea at the end of last season and has been heavily linked with a stay in England.
West Ham have admitted their interest although the 33-year-old is demanding far too much in wages for the Hammers to seal a deal.
Tottenham have also been linked with a move for the pacey striker who notched 12 times for the Blues last season.
Ajax are now in pole position to sign Eto’o and Overmars believes it would be a real coup for the Eredivisie champions.
“Samuel seemed very hungry to play for Ajax. He is fit and has a great drive to succeed once again,” Overmars told Voetbal International.
“We don’t want to block the growing process of our talents like [Arkadiusz] Milik and [Richairo] Zivkovic, but if it is possible to sign a world class player like Eto’o, then why not? It will be fantastic.”
