Cameroonian born Australian arrested in Commonwealth Games bust-up

Australian weightlifter Francois Etoundi is set to face court over a fight inside the Commonwealth Games athletes' village, while the brother of a boxer has also been charged over a separate incident.

Etoundi, who won a bronze medal in the 77kg class weightlifting in Glasgow on Sunday, was detained by police over an alleged assault on a Welsh Athlete at the village in Glasgow's east about 6am on Wednesday.

"The 29-year-old has been arrested and is presently detained in police custody in connection with an alleged assault following an altercation within the athletes' village in Glasgow," a Scotland Police spokeswoman said.

He is due to face Glasgow Sheriff Court on Thursday.

A Team Wales spokesman told the Sydney Morning Herald: "We're aware of an incident that occurred overnight involving a member of Team Wales and we're currently working with Police Scotland to assist them with their inquiries.

"Whilst the facts around the matter are being established, it would be wrong for us to comment any further."

Etoundi sought asylum in Australia after representing Cameroon at the Melbourne Commonwealth Games in 2006 and became an Australian citizen in 2008.

Australian chef de mission Steve Moneghetti will hold a press conference in Glasgow at 9am on Thursday (6pm AEST)to address all such occurences.

The brother of Australian boxer Jordan Samardali will also appear in the court on Thursday after reportedly being charged with aggravated assault.

Laith Samardali reportedly reacted angrily toward the referee when he stopped his brother's fight 39 seconds into the first round on Tuesday night.

A witness told the ABC that Samardali verbally abused the referee and started throwing bottles.

One plastic bottle allegedly hit a seven-year-old boy in the crowd.

Samardali has pleaded guilty to behaving in a threatening and abusive manner, as well as aggravated assault, the ABC reported.

"I know he's a bit of a wild sort of dude," Australian welterweight Daniel Lewis told the ABC.

"I know Jordan got TKO'd in round one and his family were a bit out of control."

He will be sentenced in the Glasgow Sheriff Court on Thursday.

Boxing section manager Allan Nicholson says he knows nothing about the incident.

"We have no idea what's going on," Nicholson told AAP.

"I'll find out what I can by tomorrow. If he wants to tell us about it, he will. "I don't see what it's got to do with us."
