Fifth Athletics Meeting Underway In Yaounde

Though the Francophonie games are still months away, Cameroonian athletes are beginning to prepare already for the competition. After the wrestling and boxing federations, the Cameroon athletics federation followed suit over the weekend with competitions for the 5th and last day of the athletics championship in Yaoundé. The competition which began yesterday at the Ahmadou Ahidjo stadium in Yaounde were geared not only towards short listing athletes for the upcoming national championship but also to select athletes to represent Cameroon in the Central African games as well as the upcoming world university games and the Francophonie Games.

So far, 17 only athletes have attained the minimal record for participation in the World university games and the Francophonie Games to take place in Nice- France in the month of September 2013. The competition also witnessed the participation of an athletic team from Atlanta, United States of America dubbed "Athletes in action" who seek to blend the spread of the word of God and the practice of the sports discipline.

The competition yesterday saw the clubs from the Armed forces and Police, FAP and Cameroon Sport, tussling for leadership in running, throw and jumps in the men and women's categories alike. Another stake of the competition was to enable athletes achieve the minimum record for participation at the upcoming Francophonie Games to take place in Nice-France in the month of September. As of now, the team from the armed forces and police is leading in women's pool with 531 points, followed by Cameroon sports on 369 points and INJS in the third position with 225 points.

The contention between the two still prevails in the men's category where Cameroon sport is leading with534 points. They are trailed in the second position by FA with 521 points and INJS comes in the third position with 2343 points.

Meanwhile, harmony has returned to the athletics house ever since the eviction of Sebastian Mbous and his replacement by Oloume Ernest as president of the federation.
