Ibrahim Tanko gets Cameroon contract extension

Ex-Ghana striker Ibrahim Tanko will stay on as the assistant coach of Cameroon after his boss Volke Finke was offered an extension to his expiring contract.

Finke, who brought in Tanko to be his assistant since he took over the Indomitable Lions two years ago, could get a renewal and continue his work beyond end of this month when his current contract expires.

This means if the contract is finally tabled, Tanko will get to continue in his job as Finke’s assistant after their future with the side was thrown into doubt following the expression of interest from several coaches.

The football federation (Fecafoot) revealed this week it had received several applications for the post, including that of former France coach Raymond Domenech.

However, Finke, who has been canvassing for support in order to continue his reform project with the Indomitable Lions, seems to have garnered some positive result.

He is backed by the presidency of the central African nation as well as kit sponsor Puma, which pays his $32,000 monthly salary.

Consequently, the Fecafoot and the ministry of sports have been asked to elaborate a new deal for the 67-year-old German.

Both institutions are yet to give a formal response.

Cameroon will play a friendly match against Burkina Faso on June 6 in Paris, before facing Mauritania for the 2015 Afcon qualifier on June 12.
