Cameroon head coach Hugo Broos has made some interesting call-ups for the team’s qualifier against South Africa on March 26th, recalling retired intentional Alex Song — and naming New York Red Bulls bench player Anatole Abang for his first senior team stint.

Abang, 19, made 17 appearances and three starts with the Red Bulls last season, scoring four goals and an assist in that time. He featured for the Cameroon U-17 team and is part of their U-20 pool as well. He also featured for the Red Bulls’ USL reserve side, New York Red Bulls II, scoring four goals in six starts last season.

While a seldom used figure within the Red Bulls’ senior team construct, the young striker is held in high regard among the team’s braintrust. Abang joined the club from Rainbow FC last season, earning his spot through a preseason trial.

Cameroon are currently atop their group with six points through two matches.
