Samuel Eto'o wants £135,000-per-week Liverpool deal

Samuel Eto'o is looking for a one-year deal worth approximately £135,000-per-week if he is to join Liverpool this summer, it has been claimed.

This information comes courtesy of Goal, who claim that ex-Chelsea striker Eto'o will hold further talks with the Reds on Thursday after failing to come to an amicable agreement during opening discussions with the club.

Those reports further suggest that Liverpool have made Eto'o an initial offer, but one that does not appear to meet his financial demands.

Chelsea departure

Eto'o is a free agent of course, with the veteran Cameroon international - who first moved to the Premier League last summer from Russian outfit Anzhi Makhachkala - having left Chelsea at the start of July following the expiration of his one-year deal at Stamford Bridge.

Despite boasting a considerable pedigree in European football dating back from his time at Barcelona and Inter Milan, 33-year-old Eto'o was largely mediocre for Chelsea, netting just nine goals during Jose Mourinho's first season back in charge in West London.

The relationship between Eto'o and Mourinho soured towards the end of former's solitary campaign at Chelsea after the Portuguese was caught appearing to question Eto'o's age - comments that led to the striker dubbing his manager 'a fool'.

Liverpool needs

Liverpool are in need of further attacking reinforcements prior to their return to the Champions League this year, of that there can surely be no question.

While Rickie Lambert, Adam Lallana and Lazar Markovic have all been brought in to boost the club's title credentials, the loss of superstar forward Luis Suarez - who scored 31 top-flight goals last season - has left them relatively short on quality options to pair alongside Daniel Sturridge at Anfield.

Belgian starlet Divock Origi has the potential to develop into a real talent at Liverpool, although he will not arrive on Merseyside on a permanent basis until 2015 once he has completed his loan spell with former club Lille.

Eto'o would certainly provide extra experience to Brendan Rodgers' squad, although he is clearly no match for Suarez in terms of sheer quality.

It remains to be seen if Liverpool will be willing to indulge Eto'o's wishes during the next round of negotiations, although £135,000-per-week seems somewhat extravagant for a player who is only ever likely to prove a short-term option.
