Table Tennis - Ngwe Emmanuel Claims Top-12 Title

He beat Michael Olasoji by three sets to two in a hotly contested final on Saturday.

Ngwe Emmanuel is decidedly unstoppable in table tennis competition on the national scene. After winning the University Games, the tennis championship and cup, the Chinese Ambassador's Cup, Ngwe Emmanuel again added another feather to his cap by winning the Top-12 competition which took place on Saturday August 11, 2012 at the Complexe La Gaieté in Bastos-Yaounde. He beat his arch rival, Michael Olasoji 3-2 in the final in the men's senior category. Whereas it was Olasoji who took the lead at the onset of the match, beating Ngwe 11-8 in the first set. Ngwe put up a spirited fight in a protracted second set edging Olasoji 15-13. In the third set he had an easy walk over Olasoji 11-6 before bowing 7-11 in the fourth set. The fifth and most decisive turned out in favour of Ngwe as he beat Olasoji 11-9 to carry the day by three sets to two.

The female category was an all Mercy Tayim affair who easily disposed of Alimatou by three sets to zero. It is worthy to mention that the female category is equally dominated by Tayim Mercy who has won all competitions in the female category this year. On the heels of Ngwe and Tayim Mercy is the budding tennis star, David Nikwango who won the competition in the men's junior category who came from two sets behind to defeat Ndikum by three sets to two. The trophy in the women's junior category was lifted by Papale Alida who thrashed Eyenga by three sets to zero. In the veteran category, Abduraman disposed of Anagho by three sets to one.

The competition sponsored by the National Hydrocarbons Company, SNH, brought together 60 participants, comprising 12 officials and 48 players. There were 12 participants in the men's senior and women's senior categories respectively, 12 in the veteran category and six in the men's junior and women's junior categories respectively. After the Top-12 competition, attention is now focused on the SONARA International tournament coming up soon.
