Unisport Outsmarts Tonnerre

The match sounded like a David versus Goliath battle pitting the league leaders, Unisport against 16th-placed Tonnerre on the point tally sheet but only in this case David was not victorious as Unisport narrowly edged Tonnerre 1-0 to conserve their lead on the championship. Both teams were fairly equal in strength though Unisport displayed some tactical superiority.

The proof is that Unisport's goal came from a collective offensive that saw Kano Tesse Paul slid the ball beneath goalkeeper Abogo Pierre of Tonnerre after receiving a cross from Elouma Alexandre at the 30th minute of play. Goalkeeper Abogo sustained an injury in the process and was substituted.

The last fifteen minutes of the first half was catastrophic for Tonnerre as Unisport would have aggravated the score had it not been for the nonchalance of the strikers. However, Tonnerre stepped up the game upon resumption of play for the second half but failed to concretise the several scoring opportunities they created upfront. The match was low keyed as no team could combine five successive passes without the ball being intercepted by the opponents.

"We came to Yaounde to win this match and the pitch is good. We missed several chances to score but the essential is that we won though only by one goal margin," said Javanovic Sinisa, the Serbian coach of Unisport. Meanwhile the coach of Tonnerre, Dieudonné Nke, who was in his first encounter since his return from suspension, said they lost because the lacked lucidity in front of the goalpost and also lacked physical freshness.

Unisport now has a four-point lead over the closest rivals, Cosmos of Bafia and Fovu of Baham while waiting for the outcome of the encounter between Union and Cosmos today in Douala. In an earlier day 15 match played last Saturday, Sable played a one-all draw with Scorpion of Bé.
