Cameroonian side Coton Sport of Garoua was the only victors on match day 2 of the 2014 Orange CAF Confederation Cup after accounting for Mali’s AS Real Bamako 2-1.
Coton Sport started that day bottom of Group A but with ASEC Mimosas and AC Leopards playing out a goalless draw the men from Garoua shot to the top of the table with three points.
Nigerien Daouda Kamilou scored to give the Coton a 1-0 half-time advantage, Badra Ali Sylla equalised and Ephraim Yosanguim snatched the winner with a beautifully crafted goal on 80th-minute.
Meanwhile in Group B, Egyptian side Al-Ahly preserved its unbeaten run in this year’s Confederation Cup with a 1-1 away draw to Etoile du Sahel of Tunisia.
Algerian Baghdad Bounedjah opened the scoring for the home side after 40 minutes when he beat goalkeeper Sherif Ekramy from close range but Ahly who were set up defensively hit back on 60th minute from Gamal.
The other Group B match played in Kitwe, Zambia was overshadowed by the death of Nkana FC coach Masauso Mwale who passed away in a road accident on the eve of Nkana vs Sewe San Pedro FC match.
Roger Assale put the Ivorians ahead midway through the opening half, Roger Kampamba equalised, and a string of spectacular Ahouchi saves denied the Zambians maximum points.
51-year-old Mwale died on the eve of the game from severe head injuries after his car overturned on the Ndola-Kitwe highway.
Sewe were grateful to goalkeeper Ake Ahouchi for making a string of saves that kept the score line at 1-1 all.
Ahly ‘s hard-won point away in Sousse came at a cost, with striker Mohamed ‘Gedo’ Nagy could be sidelined for six months after injuring his knee.
’Gedo’ retired 30 minutes into the game and he will be missing again after only recently returning to action for the Cairo ‘Red Devils’ after foot surgery.
Egyptians Ahly and Tunisians Etoile are among the three most successful CAF clubs with 26 titles between them and the Group B match at Mediterranean resort Sousse did not disappoint.
The point gained from the 1-1 draw kept Ahly top of the table with four, Etoile and Ivorians Sewe San Pedro have two each and Zambians Nkana one.
Kofi Boua missed a penalty, had a goal ruled offside, and fluffed several other scoring opportunities as Ivorians ASEC Mimosas were held 0-0 by Congolese AC Leopards in Abidjan.
Coton have three points, ASEC two, and Leopards and Real one each with the Cameroonians and Congolese playing a game less.
Matchday 3 fixtures are scheduled for the June 6-8 weekend.
