Cameroon head Coach, Alain Zedong, knows better than most that selecting Astride Gano for AfroBasket Women 2015 can be a master-class decision.
Zedong has announced his final roster for the tournament which kicks off on Thursday (September 24) in the country's capital, Yaoundé, and runs until October 3.
The inclusion of sharpshooter Gano could turn out to be a real game-changer.
At AfroBasket Women 2013 in Maputo, Mozambique, the forward energised the Cameroonian offense by averaging 9.3 points per game, scoring mainly from three-point range with her team-high 52 percent (11 of 21) shooting.
While Cameroon had to settle for a fourth-place finish following two heartbreaking defeats to Mozambique and Senegal in the Final-Phase, Gano returned home with a sense of personal accomplishment as she was the second highest three-point shooter in the tournament.
Last week, the INJS Yaoundé star poured in a team-high 15 points but Cameroon fell to Angola in the 2015 All-Africa Games Quarter-Finals in Brazzaville, Republic of Congo. As Cameroon attempts to win its first-ever AfroBasket Women title, Zedong has stuck with half of the team that lined out two years ago, recalled Sandrine Ayangma, and brought in Former Texas A&M standout Achiri Ade, who just finished her college career with averages of 6.7 points and 7.4 rebounds per game. Priscilla Mbiandja, team captain Amina Njonkou and Nicole Jamen each have at least two AfroBasket Women appearances and epitomise the potential of Cameroon's new generation of players.
The hosts of AfroBasket Women 2015 are legitimate title contenders and will be put to the test when they take on Group A opponents Mozambique, South Africa, Gabon, Uganda and Mali.
