Video: Alfred Aroga named Finals MVP

National University's (NU) dominant big man Alfred Aroga was named the Most Valuable Player of the UAAP Season 77 Finals after anchoring the Bulldogs' crushing defense against the Far Eastern University (FEU) Tamaraws.

Aroga scored 24 points, grabbed 18 rebounds, and protected the shaded lane as the Bulldogs routed the Tamaraws, 75-59, in Game 3 of the UAAP Finals to win their first championship in 60 years.

For the series, he averaged 16 points and 13 rebounds while intimidating the FEU players with his shot-blocking ability.



"It feels really great to be here, because we went through a lot," said the 6-foot-7 big man from Cameroon. "Teams that win championships have a story, and we have a story."

Aroga not only provided points and rebounds but emotional leadership for the Bulldogs, as he was often seen encouraging his teammates and cheering them on when he was on the bench.

It completed a redemption of sorts for Aroga, who was ruled ineligible last season and had to wait one more year to suit up for NU.

"I'm really thankful that we were able to get Alfred this year. He's not just a good player -- he's really a good person," said NU head coach Eric Altamirano.

"This guy, he went through a lot of heartaches -- from not being able to play last year, and from the time he arrived here, ang dami niyang naging problema," he added.

"I thank God for bringing Alfred to our team. He brought a sense of leadership, with the way he handled himself on and off the court."

Aroga's entry to the game in the first quarter of Game 3 helped turn the tide, as his defensive presence discouraged the Tamaraws from going to the basket. He was also tremendous on offense, converting seven of his 11 field goals and simply dominating the FEU big men.

Aroga also had two assists, one steal, and two blocked shots in Game 3 in what was a brilliant all-around performance for the big man.
