Former Cameroon Olympian Thomas Essomba says he will shine in front of the TV cameras when his battle with Sheffield’s Waleed Din for the vacant Commonwealth flyweight title is broadcast live on Spike TV (Channels: Sky 160, Freeview 31, Talk Talk 31, Freesat 141, BT TV 31).

The pair go head-to-head at the Magna Centre in Rotherham on October 17, with Sunderland-based Essomba already holding a wafer-thin amateur victory over Din in the 2014 senior ABA finals. This time around, Essomba promises there will be no doubt and is sure of inflicting Din’s first pro loss, and becoming the first Cameroonian to win a Commonwealth title.

“I know he thinks the 2014 decision was a bad one, but I think I have to show him in the pros that I’m the best,” explained Thomas, 27, who is on a five-fight winning streak since relocating to Wearside under manager Phil Jeffries. “I will try to do my best fight. I will stop him if possible, I know he’s rock hard. I know I have to do my best, and if possible I will stop the fight quickly.”

Din, currently 7-0 with five KO’s, has looked impressive since turning over. Nicknamed ‘Dynamite’, the 22-year-old has already had fight-insiders talking about how high he can potentially go in the sport. Undaunted, Essomba has his own ambitions and eyes Din as a stepping stone to achieving his dreams.

“I’m not scared of Waleed, I know I have to do my best. I’m confident because I work very hard to make my fights easy. Everything I do is to help me win my fights. My dream is to be world champion.”

Dennis Hobson Promotions presents Waleed Din versus Thomas Essomba for the vacant Commonwealth flyweight title at Rotherham’s Magna Centre on October 17.
