According to a study by the National Institute of Statistics (INS), 14,723 production units operate in the cotton-textile-clothing industry in Cameroon.
99,4% of these units are small enterprises, who achieved an annual turnover of FCfa 16.7 billion out global sales of FCfa 142 billion for the whole sector in 2013.
This global turnover, the INS study stresses, can be essentially attributed to the cotton ginning activities, which represents 87.3% of the total amount and comes from medium and large enterprises. Geographically, these units are mainly in Douala (23%), Yaoundé (26%) and in the North-West region (12%).
"The lack of financial support, the high cost of raw materials, the obsolescence of the production equipment and the fiscal pressure are among the biggest difficulties with which small units in the sector have to contend", the INS study indicates.
