Members of the National Syndicate of Agricultural Workers Union were in Tiko last Friday July 4 to prepare themselves to take part in the upcoming World Banana Forum in Europe.

The workers made stops at Banana plantations in the CDC/Delmonte zones in Tiko, to ascertain the condition of workers in the banana sector.

According to the Fako Divisional President of the Union, Gabriel Vefonge Mbene, the Tiko meeting was also a platform to discuss ways of lobbying other social partners in the industry. The meeting was held under the auspices of the First Assistant Divisional Officer for Tiko, Mrs. Eyong Charlotte.

Addressing the unionists, she said the sector is a very important one especially since it produces what majority of Cameroonians consume.

It should be noted that the Banana sector employs 7000 people directly and over 30,000 indirectly. Meanwhile the First Assistant Mayor for Tiko adviced that the sector and its workers should be united and create a vibrant Banana private sector.

The National President, Moukory Songa Alfred joined voices with his members to frown at the recent increase in price of fuel which to them will be affecting the living conditions of the workers in the banana sector.
