The government of Cameroon has an ambitious programme to encourage agriculture in the Bakassi peninsular. Cameroon got back the peninsular from Nigeria following the International Court of Justice settlement of the boundary dispute between the two countries.

“We want to see how the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development can support PAMOL to extend its oil plantations to Bakassi.” This was the declaration of Ndoh Bertha Bakata, Chairperson of the Coordination and Follow-up Committee on the Implementation of Priority Projects to be realized in the Bakasssi zone after an evaluation meeting in Yaounde last weekend.

She further disclosed that besides extending PAMOL plantations, “we are thinking of setting up a large scale cultivation of Okro and pineapples because the area is fertile, especially Isangele and Akwa where we have the mainland.”

In 2016, government plans to invest over FCFA 2 billion to sponsor priority projects in the peninsular. Ndoh Bertha explained that, “More construction work is envisaged, especially on fishermen lodging projects. At this moment, over a hundred lodging facilities are available for fishermen because most of them come from the northern part of the country.”

She said when the lodging facilities must have been completed, more Cameroonian fishermen will come and settle in the area, especially around the New Beach where the houses are already being constructed.

Since Cameroon and Nigeria signed the Green Tree Agreement in 2006 that spelt out the procedure for the withdrawal of Nigerian forces from Bakassi and handing over of power to Cameroon, government has invested much in the area. The Greentree agreement made provisions for Cameroon’s effective occupation of the peninsular through the provision of socio-cultural, economic and administrative facilities to the population. Most of the inhabitants of Bakassi peninsular are of Nigerian origin.
