Bamenda I Water Management Board installed

The Assistant Senior Divisional Officer, SDO for Mezam, Daniel Motia Diony, has called on the newly elected members of the water management board of Bamendankwe in Bamenda I Subdivision to ensure potable water is supplied to all neighborhoods.

The installation took place at the esplanade of the Bamendankwe Fon’s palace on September 12. As a source of life, which if not well treated and the catchment protected, water could be a source of death, the Assistant SDO said while expressing gratitude to the Mayor of Bamenda I Council and her Councillors for lending support to the new water management board. The SDO also warned against laziness and corrupt practices that might mar their activities.

Addressing the population, the Mayor, Caroline Bih Bongwa, said: “An unhealthy society is very inimical to the development of our municipality”. She sited the decree No 2009/222 0f June 30, which empowers the Council to be the sole manager of water consumed by the public. It is in this light, and to facilitate the task to be performed by the Council, that water committees and water management boards have to be elected by communities, represented by all zones.

Mayor Bongwa expressed joy that the days of anarchy that characterised the management and distribution of water in her municipality will soon be over, following the installation of the new board made of technicians.

The brain behind the creation of a new water management board, Denis Ngwa Sangbong, First Deputy Mayor of Bamenda I, regretted that Bamendankwe Village is the source of water to all of Bamenda town; but that a greater portion of its population does not have potable water.

“We are going to work hand-in-glove with CamWater, CDE and plead that they pay royalties to the Council for the supervisory role over the new water management board.

Those elected into the water management board include: Chairman, Clement Fongong; Vice, Joseph Ngonpe; Secretary General, Emmanuel Tangie; Financial Secretary, Stephen Akoh and Treasurer, Florence Mushongong.
