Cameroon’s mobile penetration hits 80%

Cameroon had 16.8 million mobile phone users at the end of September 2015, compared to 16.6 million at the end of 2014, according to telecom regulator ART. Based on the country’s population of 22 million, mobile penetration rose to 80 percent from 71 percent.

MTN and Orange have a 93.8 percent combined market share, specifically 57.04 percent for the former and 36.8 percent for the latter.

The country’s third operator, NextTel, took 4.66 percent of the market a little more than a year after lanch. Incumbent operator Camtel, the monopoly fixed-line carrier, had a 1.4 percent share of mobile phone users at the end of September 2015.
